American Corner Is To Be Opened in Szeged

A program office focusing on American culture and values is about to open on 21st March in the building of Szent-Györgyi Albert Agora. American Corner of Szeged is going to offer cultural programs, seminars, science-promoting lectures, scholarship opportunities and an American library.

The 5th American Corner is to be opened within the framework of a cooperation of the Embassy of the United States, the University of Szeged, Szeged Municipality and Szent-Györgyi Albert Agora. The office – being part of the American Spaces network represented in 150 countries – is opening its door on 21st March. Owing to the office to be opened in Szeged, not only the inhabitants of Szeged but also the South-Great Plain region can get to know America.

’Visitors of the Corner will be able to get to know the United States via workshops, clubs, lectures promoting technology and science; a conference room equipped with modern IT-tools, such as a 3D-printer, as well as publications on the history and culture of the United States and a library are at disposal. American celebrations and holidays are going to be introduced on lectures and cultural programs’ says Judit Gera, the head of the office.

The institution provides information regarding American scholarships and education opportunities for high school and university students. Occasions developing English language skills will be also scheduled on a regular basis; trainings and workshops aiming the development of entrepreneurial competences will be offered as well. The Corner intends to establish close relations with the University of Szeged, local primary and secondary schools, civil society organizations and business ventures.

Most of the programs offered by the Corner are going to be free to attend and conducted in English. Visitors of all age are welcomed on the third floor of Szent-Györgyi Albert Agora during opening hours.

David Kostelancik, chargé d’affaires of the American Embassy of Budapest is attending the official opening event of the office on 21st March 2018. Programs of the American Corner are going to be launched from the 22nd March; updates and information regarding the available programs are published on the Facebook page of American Corner Szeged, Instagram and Twitter.

SZTE Experience

Being awarded the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship, I came from Lebanon to Szeged. Student life here is astonishing; I simply adore being a student at SZTE. A variety of foreign scholars, and young people have arrived here from all corners of the world. After having finished with academic work at the lab, there is still time for relaxing. The town itself is also impressive – my favourite place is Széchenyi tér.

I heard about Stipendium Hungaricum from a fellow countryman. I would love to teach at a university one day, but a Doctorate degree is often required in order to do so. That is why I came to Szeged, where I am currently working on my doctoral thesis in educational science – my special field of interest is scientific literacy of students. Life is completely different in Namibia; it is mostly a rural country and agriculture is still hardly mechanised and many homesteads in villages in the countryside are built of wood. The weather is totally different from the one in Szeged, the cold and icy weather caught me by surprise after returning from Christmas holiday, I didn’t have proper shoes so my feet were constantly freezing.
