SZTE has improved its position in the CWUR ranking

The University of Szeged is more than half a hundred places ahead in the list of Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), making SZTE the best university out of the capital in Hungary. The CWUR examined 20,000 higher education institutions in the world, of which the top two thousand were ranked in the 2019/2020 list.

This year the University of Szeged moved from last year's 758th position to the 692nd place - 66 places up - in the CWUR World Ranking. This makes SZTE one of the first 3.5 percent of the world's universities. In terms of Hungary, SZTE achieved the third best position this year, ahead of only two institutions in the capital. With this result, the University of Szeged has the title of the best university in the country out of the capital.

Each year, the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) ranks the world's universities. Among the 20,000 higher education institutions, the best two thousand universities are chosen from the worlds institutions based on seven criteria. These criteria include quality of education, graduate students opportunities, teacher excellence, number of publications, and citation rate.

Nine of the Hungarian institutions ranked among the top two thousand. In addition to SZTE, ELTE (598), Semmelweis University (643), University of Debrecen (724) and BME (862) were among the top 5 Hungarian higher education institutions. The world rankings are again led by three US institutions. Ranked as first on the list is Harvard University, as second Massachusetts Institute of Technology and as third Stanford University.

SZTE Experience

PhuongPhuong Thu Tran - Faculty of Economics - Business Administration and Management

I live in Budapest, and I commute by train to Szeged every day. It’s not a huge distance for me, I got used to travelling back home. I study, watch the scenery or the people. Once I lost my wallet, and everyone around me tried to help. One of them offered to give me some money, another one offered to take me where I had to go. I love Szeged, Hungarians and nice, and I like the cuisine, though the spicy food is not spicy enough for my taste. I’m very happy to study here. At the Faculty of Economics, the program is practice-oriented, we get a lot of useful information and a lot of opportunities are offered by our professors.

I heard about Stipendium Hungaricum from a fellow countryman. I would love to teach at a university one day, but a Doctorate degree is often required in order to do so. That is why I came to Szeged, where I am currently working on my doctoral thesis in educational science – my special field of interest is scientific literacy of students. Life is completely different in Namibia; it is mostly a rural country and agriculture is still hardly mechanised and many homesteads in villages in the countryside are built of wood. The weather is totally different from the one in Szeged, the cold and icy weather caught me by surprise after returning from Christmas holiday, I didn’t have proper shoes so my feet were constantly freezing.
