Environmental Sciences (PhD)

About the programme

Environmental education at the University of Szeged has been internationally acknowledged for decades. The doctoral school carries out activities concerning the environmental aspects of the fields of chemistry, biology, physics, and geography, among others. Due to the interdisciplinary aspects of environmental science, PhD students of the programme have to choose at least one basic course that is not related to their own research topic and a minimum of four courses related to the research topic of the PhD student. Rigorous coursework develops abilities concerning environmental sciences and specific knowledge in the research fields related to the research programme of the Doctoral School.

The major fields are: Environmental Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Conservation Ecology, Environmental Physics, Environmental Geography, Environmental Geology, Environmental Chemistry and Analytics, Environmental Chemical Technology and Material Science, Environmental Engineering.

Sample research areas: Biotechnology as green chemistry, Population and conservation genetics of arthropods, Photoacoustic spectroscopic gas detection, Evaluation of environmental changes by geographical methods, The role of sulphur in petroleum formation and in coalification processes, Adsorption and photocatalytic decomposition of hydrocarbons derivatives. For more research topics please consult the programme website.

If the medium of instruction was English during the Msc studies, the MSc diploma can be accepted as language exam certificate for the entry requirement. For this purpose a document issued by the university has to be uploaded until the application deadline certifying that the medium of instruction was English during the master studies. If this document is missing or uploaded after deadline, the master degree cannot substitute the language exam certificate and the application will be rejected. Nikki - Faculty of Health Sciences and Social Studies

My name is Nikki and I am from Iran. Currently I am a second year student studying Physiotherapy at the University of Szeged. I really like the Environment of Szeged as it is a true University City where you can meet people from around the world. I consider Szeged as my second home since I have established my own path here and I have a lot of friends who make me feel home. The reason why I came to Szeged is because I was informed by one of my friends about the fact that the University degrees are EU accredited and will help me to reach my goals and open doors for future job opportunities. Once I have obtained my degree, I would like to stay in Hungary and pursue a post graduate program. Later on I will seize the opportunity to gain some job experience in my field here in Hungary before I hold my ground in Europe.

Tamerlan Mendybayev – Faculty of Agriculture

My name is Tamerlan Mendybayev. I am from capital of Kazakhstan, Nur-Sultan. Currently I am first year student at the Faculty of Agriculture. I chose the University of Szeged as my study destination for several reasons: firstly, it is a well-known applied science institution in Europe and the best in Hungary. Secondly, the program is designed with a significant focus on the developing practical skills of the students and there is a University pilot farm where students keen their skills and implement their knowledge in practice. Undoubtedly, University of Szeged is a place where students become professionals in their academic field.
